Ziqitza Healthcare - 8th March Women’s day

International Women's Day (March 8) is a worldwide celebration of women's historical, cultural, and political achievements. The day was also observed in support of global action against gender inequality. We are all aware that the world would not function without women. Today is the day to thank them for their efforts! Women's organisations of all sizes came together to express how important they are in today's society.

What is International Women's Day?

The celebration of women's achievements in the social, economic, cultural, and political realms is known as International Women's Day (IWD). The day, which was created by a group of women, also raises awareness about gender equality and women's rights.

Gender parity is a statistical measure that compares men and women based on factors such as income, education, and work hours. Researchers can use this sociological indicator to see how society is progressing or regressing in various areas. It's also a useful tool for policymakers who want to achieve gender equality.

Of course, International Women's Day is a moment to reflect on how far women have come, advocate for what still needs to be done, and take action to keep breaking down barriers.

Why is International Women's Day celebrated on March 8?

The inaugural celebration of International Women's Day took place in 1909 when the Socialist Party of America honoured 15,000 women who opposed excessive work hours, low pay, and the absence of voting rights in New York City.

The enormous yearly festival, formerly known as National Women's Day, swept across the globe (first commemorated in 1911), but it was Russia who unwittingly created the March 8 pattern. Despite the fact that International Women's Day became an official holiday in Russia in 1913, women still faced challenges as a result of WWI. Women had to deal with food shortages and a government that wouldn't listen to them while men were at war.

Tens of thousands of Russian women marched to the streets on March 8, 1917 (February 23 in the old Russian calendar) to demand change. Soon after, Russian women were granted voting rights as a result of the united call for relief.

The theme for International Women's Day 2022 (IWD 2022) is "Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow," honouring the contributions of women and girls around the world who are leading the charge on climate change adaptation, mitigation, and response in order to create a more sustainable future for all. The colours of International Women's Day are purple, green, and white. Purple is the colour of justice and dignity. Green is the colour of hope. White is a contentious notion that denotes purity. In 1908, the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU) in the United Kingdom created the colours.
